More to follow on the topic of organizational structures but sticking to the topic of training and the successful implementations of training, it is imperative that structure is not the reason you are wasting time and money on training.
Typically, the various departments within an organization are at various stages of development. This is common and healthy. Some have been around for a long time with successful / established processes, i.e., they are mature. Some are new, still learning, growing, and downright messy. It is the responsibility of leadership to understand where each department is within its own growth cycle and guarantee that the differences in each department do not impair its own development or the development of its sibling departments.
What leadership needs to avoid is the expectation that each department will benefit from the same path of training and development. Results matter more than the process, and great leadership will allow for customization of the training process so that everyone can improve. Sometimes, it takes an outsider’s perspective with an insider’s knowledge to bring awareness of growth opportunities.
