The Great Training Robbery: Do you provide a safe environment to learn and grow?
Much of the investment agencies make in training is wasted. Per a study in the Harvard Business Review, much of this is due to a lack of a psychologically safe climate in which subordinates feel free to speak up. That includes staff unable to speak to managers and managers unable to talk with senior leadership. To fix this, the environment must allow for hard conversations upward.
The C-suite must foster an environment of free-flowing and challenging conversations. Managers must learn that it is safe to initiate conversations so that they will be heard. Together, a path forward will be implemented, and that the structure is flexible enough to allow for changes needed to implement change successfully. Once managers believe this to be true, staff will feel confident to have the same type of conversations with management.
Only invest in training if you are going to allow for the implementation. Ensure you attend to organizational design and managerial process, then individual development.
